Phrasal Verbs

Phrasal verbs in English are verbs followed by an adverb or a preposition. They often have more than one meaning, and they often change the meaning of the verb in idiomatic ways. For example: blow up = explode / work out = be successful / call off = cancel
With some phrasal verbs the verb and preposition can be divided: set a meeting up / get your point of view across Other phrasal verbs cannot be separated: get on with / drop out of.

Ask around – ask many people the same question
Jim asked around, but nobody knew when the client would arrive.
Back (someone) up – support
The team backed Raju up when he expressed a desire to participate in cultural events at work.
Chip in – help / contribute
When Pratik ran into financial trouble, all his friends chipped in to help him overcome the crisis.
Drop out – quit / leave
Sarah had to drop out of the hockey team when she fractured her leg in an accident.
Turn down – reject
The competitor’s offer was handsome, but Varun turned it down; he was happy in his current job.
