Build your Vocabulary – Idioms
Idioms are words, phrases, or expressions that are grammatically unusual (as in, “Long time, no see!”), and their meaning cannot be taken literally (for example, “raining cats and dogs”).
Here are some idioms to make you sound confident, sophisticated and eloquent!!
- Get a move on – to hurry
With the project deadline looming ahead, we must get a move on!
- Drop (someone) a line – write to someone
There has been a change in plans so the manager will drop the client a line to apprise them of our progress.
- Have (your) hands full – be extremely busy
Savitha has her hands full with the white paper that she has to submit by the end of the week.
- Jump the gun – do something in haste, before the appropriate time
Mithun jumped the gun and started packing when he heard that his colleagues were getting transferred to different locations.
- Know (something) inside out – know something thoroughly/completely
