Confusing Words
Speakers and writers of English often confuse words that sound or are written alike.
They are called false cognates. Even if you are an excellent speaker / writer, you should read through this list!
- Accept vs. Except
Accept = to take willingly. For eg: They accepted her apology and asked her to resume work.
Except = excluding something. For eg: Everyone had confirmed their nomination except
Kailash.
- Among vs. Between
Among = choice of 3 or more. For eg: Ashok had to choose among 4 resources.
Between = refers to only 2 things. For eg: Please divide the module between Ram and Mohan.
- Boring vs. Bored
Boring = something / someone is dull. For eg: The book was very boring .
Bored = feeling weary / impatient. For eg: Ajith was bored during the presentation.
- Amused vs. Bemused
Amused = entertained. For eg: Shiven was amused when the trainer cracked jokes.
Bemused = confused, lost. For eg: Smitha was bemused by the unexpected specification changes in the
project.
